Can helping the local community build greater employee engagement?

A Fleishman Hillard survey conducted in 1999 found that 87% of European
employees feel greater loyalty to socially engaged employers, a further
recent report by the City of London found that corporate volunteering in
education offers significant financial benefits for businesses

Employers benefit from improved reputations, improving customer and brand
loyalty, motivated employees, higher morale and improved commercial
productivity.

Their employees benefit through the development of hard skills and
competencies alongside a range of softer benefits such as confidence
building and empathy.

The community organisations benefit in many areas depending on their
requirements, these can include capacity building, asset replacement,
positive change, environmental impact, wellbeing and skills development.

Measuring the benefits of employee community engagement has to be more than
just doing the right thing.

Delivering the best opportunity to benefit from community investment depends
on the engagement activities the business has taken. A one off fund raising
event may appear to be seen as doing the right thing however it gives little
opportunity for the business to benefit, whilst a structured programme of
activities with community or charity partners should produce long term
business benefits.
